The Sea-Wolf shows all of this in the way he used his experiences on the Sophia Sutherland. A despised cockney who died en route was reborn as the cook. London met a seal poacher named Alexander MacLean and, in part, the man formed the character of Wolf Larsen, the Captain of the Ghost. While he was writing The Sea-Wolf, London was sailing a small sloop through San Francisco Bay and on one occasion, nearly collided with a ferry. The event shows up in the beginning of the book. Many of his characters can be seen to have come from people in his own hfe and, often, himself.
To view The Sea-Wolf in this way is to shift away from a rousing adventure tale to a story full of things that Jack London wanted us to know. It is still an adventure; but it is also a story of the growth of the main character--Humphrey Van Weydon--from a person incapable of reaching out and taking hold of the world, to a fully adult man capable of surviving in both the natural world and the world of the mind. His tutor in this process is not a gende lecturer but Wolf Larsen: a vicious, brilliant, self-serving brute of a man. Van Weydon learns by being challenged, he grows by overcoming the challenges.
