为了满足我国大学生完成基础阶段的英语学习后，进一步提高英语能力的需要，我社从剑桥大学出版社精选了四种教材，引进后汇成“大学目标英语”系列，旨在指导学生在更高阶段的英语学习，训练学生在碰到难度较大的英语文章时如何更有效地听、读、记笔记、思考和讨论，以及如何完成学习或考试中要求的写作任务。《高年级英语听说》为该系列教材中的一种，具有如下特点：内容围绕“人类社会行为”这一主题铺开，涵盖多个有趣话题，如“工作压力与身体健康”、“自由与责任”、“智商探秘“等等。每一章节围绕一个话题，通过听说完成一系列的任务，从而训练学习者掌握多种重要的听力、记笔记和讨论的技能，包括：如何听懂指令，如何抓住细节，如何进行总结，如何完成口头陈述，如何使用各种符号、缩略语和电报式语言快速记笔记等。听力材料中既有轻松活泼的谈话节目，也有正式的课堂讲座，均由专业人员录制完成。向学习者展示了北美文化的众多方面，以促使其对不同文化间的共同点和差异点进行深入的探讨。
