Eli and Edythe L. Broad's collections of contemporary art, formed in Los Angeles, are ranked among the best in the world. Since the 1970s the Broads have actively pursued the work of prominent and emerging artists of the second half of the twentieth century, including representatives from major national and international art movements such as American Pop and German NeoExpressionism. While remaining committed to the artists whose work they first acquired, they continue to add younger artists to their roster. Their collecting is motivated not only by their aesthetic and intellectual interests but by their devotion to the cultural life of their citYvtheir country, and the world at large. In addition to their extensive personal collection, they established The Broad Art Foundation as a lending institution in 1984.
Jasper Johns to Jeff Koons: Four Decades of Art from the Broad Collections, organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), is the first large-scale exhibition of the Broads'achievement, presenting more than 100 works of art from these two significant collections. The show highlights American artists whose paintings, sculptures, and photographs the Broads have acquired in depth, among them Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Roy Lichtenstein, Cindy Sherman, and Cy Twombly, Johns, Koons, and the Los Angeles artists John Baldessari, Sharon Lockhart, Charles Ray, Ed Ruscha, and Robert Therrien. German artists such as George Baselitz and Anselm Kiefer are also represented. Together, these works form an invaluable record of the artistic achievements of the past forty years.
