In celebration of its 5th anniversary, the Monaco Grimaldi Forum pays homage to the African continent and affirms its vocation as a meeting place for the patrimony and cultures of the world.
"Arts of Africa" is an unprecedented presentation of the cultural heritage of that continent as seen through the eyes of two great experts of traditional and contemporary african art, Mr. Ezio Bassani and Mr. Andre Magnin, enhanced by the renown architect and designer Ettore Sottsass who created the exhibition staging.
This exhibition opens the way to an aesthetic appreciation of African culture. The exceptional objects of traditional art presented here, coming from many private collections and from famous museums and institutions, are evidence of this. Not only are these objects the material testimony of a cultural identity, they are above all works of art.
This aesthetic journey continues with the presentation never before shown ofcommissions and works of African artists coming from the CAAC (Contemporary African Art Collection), a unique collection initiated by Mr. Jean Pigozzi who for over twenty years has been wholeheartedly supporting and promoting more than fifty artists living and creating in their country of origin within Black Africa.
I salute all the talent of the experts who have made it possible through this event to shine an original light upon the history of african art, encompassed in its diversity as well as its contemporaneity, thus giving proof that this patrimony belongs also to the whole of humanity.
