Nek Chand knows o lot about roads. For decades, he inspected those of Chandigarh. Perhaps that is why he chose the most improbable one. In the 1960s, while an entire American generation was hitting the road to find a reason to live, Chand "the uprooted" settled down where he was, defined his space, and began building his reality.
Some of us believe that things always happen for a reason. The Pundit Nehru invited Le Corbusier to concretize his urban utopia in Chandigarh and, in the materials rejected by this gigantic project, Nek Chand was to find the thousands of disparate and seemingly worthless elements that would enable him to shape his world. The merging of a political vision with an intellectual accomplishment gave his passionate creativity the means to express itself and to develop over time.
