序言 杨自伍同志主编的《英国文化选本》(英汉对照本上下册)深得我心,因为这个选本熔文、史、哲于一炉,也就是说打通了所谓“词章”、“考据”和“义理”三种学问,把英国从文艺复兴到现今历代人文科学思想家当中的一些代表人物和代表散文作品收集在一起,因此称得上是一部“比较全面的英国文化选本”。自从我国改革开放以来,人民的英语技能有了显著的提高,英语普及的范围也有了大幅度的增长。其原因主要是为了满足经济发展和科技进步的需要。一般侧重于英语四会能力训练的教材和读物无疑对学习英语的人帮助很大,这方面的书籍已出版不少。但是如何进一步提高英语写作和翻译水平,并且扩大和丰富有利于英语学习的文化背景知识,这已成为当务之急。这部《英国文化选本》的出版,我认为,对满足这方面的需要不无助益。 英国历代人文科学家(社会科学家和自然科学家也不例外)大多数都称得上是英文散文家。他们当中名家辈出,文风千姿百态,美不胜收。现就上册所选第一位作家罗杰·阿斯克姆的思想和文章风格谈一点个人体会。阿斯克姆是文艺复兴时期英国人文主义思想家,他曾先后担任剑桥大学希腊文教授、伊丽莎白一世女皇希腊文私人教师、玛丽一世女皇拉丁文秘书和英国派驻神圣罗马帝国皇帝查理五世宫廷外交使团拉丁文秘书。他有两部重要散文著作:《弓箭手》(Toxophilus,1545)和《男教师》(The Scholemaster,1570)。阿斯克姆的人文主义思想主要体现于教育方面。他认为教育的目标应该是按照柏拉图的方式培养和谐的人,也就是德、智、体全面发展的人,因此他在《弓箭手》一书中特别强调体育的重要性。他虽然不是清教徒,但他同情清教徒的道德观,反对意大利放纵的生活方式对英国青年的邪恶影响,主张修身和节欲。在《男教师》一书中他认为,教导青年应该采用劝说的方法,而不应采取恐吓或惩罚的手段。 阿斯克姆最重要的贡献还在于他有力地推动了英国散文的发展。他的文风朴素、明晰、雄辩、流畅,一扫十五世纪末和十六世纪初期英国散文的空洞、华丽、学究气和掉书袋的积习。阿斯克姆散文的一大特点是句型结构的对称。例如在他的另一部散文作品《德国事务和情况的报导》(Report of the Affairs and State of Germany,1553)里,他对萨克森公爵毛里斯是这样描绘的: He was five years prisoner in this court,where hewon such love of all men as the Spaniards now say theywould as gladly fight to set him up again as ever theydid to pull him down;for they see that he is wise in allhis doings,just in all his dealings,lowly to themeanest,princely with the biggest,and exceeding gentle to all:whom no adversity could ever move,nor policy at any time entice,to shrink from God and his word. 在这个宫廷里他做了五年囚徒,可是在那里他却赢得了大家对他的爱戴,就像那些西班牙人现在说的那样:过去他们总想努力把他打倒,如今他们却同样积极地想方设法把他扶植起来。那是因为他们认识到他的一切所做所为都很明智,待人接物十分正直,对下谦卑恭顺,对上高贵威严,对所有的人都非常和蔼可亲。贫贱不能移,富贵不能淫,永不背离上帝和圣经。 塞缪尔·约翰逊著有《阿斯克姆传》(Life Ascham,1761),对阿斯克姆推崇备至,说《男教师》一书中“或许包含着人们从来所提供的对于学习各种语言的最好劝告”。在《男教师》中阿斯克姆还讨论了拉丁文教学问题,他劝人采用两度翻译法(the double—translation method),即把拉丁文译成英文,再把英文译文还原译成拉丁文。我年轻时练习英文写作也曾使用此法,先译英文为中文,再把中文译文还原译为英文,然后比较英文原文和我从中文译文还原到英文的译文。比较的结果会给学习者很大的启发和帮助。约翰逊的英文散文风格在对仗工整、铿锵有力这些特点上显然受到阿斯克姆的英文散文的影响,同时也吸收了拉丁散文的某些优点。在此基础上,终于形成了英文散文的典型风格:朴素、明晰、雄辩、流畅。
