This is the first, full colour introductory publication on the IMMA Collection. The Collection has grown substantially in the fourteen years of the Museum's existence and can now proudly boast a wide range of artworks reflecting the seismic changes in art practice and in taste that have occurred since the 194os. Up to now, the IMMA Collection has concentrated on purchasing work by living artists but major gifts of earlier artworks have been gratefully encouraged and received. The majority of artworks in the IMMA Collection are of Irish origin but regular purchases of work by artists from other countries and continents ensure a fascinating range of material from painting to film and installation, by artists as diverse as James Coleman, Rebecca Horn, Stephan Balkenol, Willie Doherty, Sean Scully, Dennis Oppenheim, Joseph Kossuth, and llya and Emilia Kabakov. This book introduces over 18o of the artworks in the IMMA Collection, selected to give a sampling of the quality, range of approaches and international contexts from which they have emerged. Short texts accompany each artist's work while an introduction to collecting policy by the Director, Enrique Juncosa and essays on the history of the building and the IMMA Collection to date by Catherine Marshall, Senior Curator: Collections are also included.
