WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE was born in 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon to John Shakespeare, an alderman andglove-maker, and Mary Arden, the daughter of a land-owner. He married Anne Hathaway at the age ofeighteen, and six months later Anne gave birth to adaughter Susannah and later to twins Hamnet andJudith, though Hamnet died at the age of just 11. Shake-speare had a successful career in London and was ahugely prolific writer with 39 plays and 154 sonnets attributed to him. He retired at the age of 49, moving back to Stratford-upon-Avon, and died aged 52.
