　　本片根据1965年美国印第安纳波利斯的真实案件改编而成。女孩西尔维亚（艾伦?佩姬 Ellen Page 饰）因游乐园工作的父母事务繁忙，与妹妹简妮（哈蕾?麦克法兰 Hayley McFarland 饰）搬入育有七子女的单亲母亲格特鲁德?巴尼泽夫斯基（凯瑟琳?基纳 Catherine Keener 饰）家暂住。格特鲁德的大女儿宝拉（阿丽?葛雷勒 Ari Graynor 饰）未婚先孕，西尔维亚无意中听到这一消息，失口告知同学，没想消息泄露。宝拉迁怒西尔维亚，致使其被格特鲁德体罚。这之后，酗酒成性的格特鲁德将一切家庭问题均归于西尔维亚的到来，背着镇上人将她囚于地下室，并怂恿子女用酷刑折磨西尔维亚。不仅如此，镇上其他儿童也参与到这残酷的摧残中，共同实施了美国历史上针对个人犯下的最严重的罪行之一。
