　　上世纪30年代，一家德国巧克力厂的老板是俄国人，面对婚姻和事业双重触礁，万念俱灰。他幻想脱离自己的生活，如同灵魂出窍似的从旁观察自己。当他看到一个街头流浪汉时，那人在他眼里跟他自己长得一模一样。为了“互换身份”，他杀死了对方。
　　本片跟法斯宾德其他作品有很大差异，他采用了知名编剧的剧本，而且还是改编自纳博科夫的小说。精彩对白似乎集中在影片的前三分之一。影片大胆、俗气，曾遭到广泛的恶评。
