　　在介绍本片之前，首先需要讲点历史。墨丘利计划系美国最早的载人航天计划，首次载人航天飞行是在1961年5月5日。在这之前的两年时间里，美国宇航局多次试飞无人操作的墨丘利飞船。最后一次试飞是在1961年1月底，乘客是黑猩猩Ham，飞船飞越大西洋700公里。飞行过程中出现了几个小问题，但Ham死里逃生并在海上着陆。后来，美国宇航局就再也没有请Ham上飞船了。
　　本片的故事，还得从当年这位勇敢的黑猩猩航天员Ham说起。为了从Ham家族的名声中捞取好处，一名参议员找来了Ham的孙子、屁用没有的笨蛋猩猩Ham三世，让它和两个猿猴同伴坐上最先进的宇宙飞船，穿越虫洞去往一个陌生星球。在那里，Ham三世遭遇了一个暴君，并展开了一段奇妙的旅程。
