　　故事发生在1923年的伦敦，那是一个美丽的夏天，也是一战结束后的第五个年头，所有人都平静且安逸地生活着。议员瑞查德的夫人克罗利萨正在为晚上即将在家中举行的盛大舞会做着准备：光彩照人的晚礼服、丰盛的餐点、闪闪发光的银质餐具、整洁明亮的客厅……克罗利萨将一切都布置得井井有条，她想让所有的人都能通过舞会获得一分好心情，当然也以此来填补自己生活的空虚。
　　午后，一位客人的意外到访将克罗利萨平静的心情击起了涟漪，也将她的思绪带回到了上个世纪末--1890年的一个夏天。当时的克罗利萨是那样的年轻、漂亮，拥有众多的追求者，而彼得就是其中之一，他们愉快的度过了整个夏天，彼得本以为克罗利萨将成为他的妻子，但瑞查德的出现很快便使他的期望化为乌有。渴望安定生活的克罗利萨嫁给了沉稳的瑞查德，而彼得则选择了远走他乡，去了印度。
　　30年后，再次出现在克罗利萨的面前，彼得仍在被感情所困绕，而面对昔日的恋人，克罗利萨也被一种无法抗拒的东西深深的打动，她开始厌倦了上层社会的虚伪和乏味，她似乎看到了隐藏在一个个身着光鲜的客人背后，那一张张丑陋的面孔。悠扬的乐曲中，克罗利萨与彼得翩翩起舞，同时也共同渴望着真实而美好的生活……
