　　1983年，受IRS(Institute of Regional Study)委托，导演雷吉奥拍出了一部非叙事性的电视片，在这基础上，Qatsi系列第一部惊世之作《失衡生活》(Koyaanisqatsi)应运而生。在得到了包括卢卡斯、科波拉等人的大力支持与推广之后，《失衡生活》在当时形成了轰动性的效果。

　　

　　"KOYAANISQATSI"是美国印第安族霍皮人的方言，意指失去平衡的生活。导演高夫瑞·雷吉奥在这部历时八年制作的记录片中采用了创新的电影语言，全片没有情节、角色及对白，完全依靠影像及配乐。

　　

　　

　　这就是耗时7年的惊世之作，在当年轰动一时的记录片《失去平衡的生活》。Koyaanisqatsi的片名出自印第安语，有疯狂、混乱、失去平衡、崩溃和另类生活的含义。此片的诞生历经波折，曾经遭遇严重的资金危机，幸而得到包括卢卡斯、科波拉等著名电影人的大力支持，为完成影片的拍摄工作，身为导演的天主教牧师雷吉奥还亲自兼职出租车司机长达5年之久。这部非叙事性记录片以全新的手法，将优美的自然影像、都市风景和快慢动作处理、双重曝光以及人类破坏环境的镜头并置剪接在一起，以纯粹画面蒙太奇的形式，自然的景物与工业社会所创造的人工景物进行鲜明的对比。导演以宗教式的关怀，控诉了工业文明对自然环境的破坏，表达对人类现代社会工业化进程的忧虑。影片没有对主题进行任何说教而是，采取了舒缓的方式进行表达，镜头和音乐开始在表达自然景象时都很缓慢，后来速度逐渐加快，画面出现汽车、飞机和忙碌得像蚂蚁一样到处乱闯的人群，巧妙地组成一首由动态影像和交响音乐构成的叙事诗。
