◎简　　介

　　北极地区总是带着神秘色彩，也是神话传说中的迷人胜境。然而，这里每年有九个月被冰雪覆盖，生存环境比世上其他地方更为严苛。这里乍似冷酷无情，原来却是不少物种的家园 ——北极熊、弓头鲸、一角鲸、厚嘴海鸦，还有人类皆居于此，北冰洋部分水域更是全球最丰饶的海洋生态系统之一。
　　数千年来，因纽特人和前居者适应了北极地区，并在此落地生根。他们在冰原上寻找食物，互相交往，起居作息。为了生存，因纽特人还发展出一些特别的技能，他们透过观察冰雪反照在云层上的光，便能判断在远处有没有开阔的水域。这些传统智慧正好帮助前来研究的科学家。
　　现时，北极地区已成为研究重点，科学家揭露了全球人类活动正如何影响这片遥远脆弱的地方。全球暖化对北极地区的影响比其他地方更为严重，北冰洋上的永久浮冰已缩减近百分之七十，如情况持续，终有一天北冰洋在夏季将完全无冰。世代生长在这片冰天雪地的动植物和居民能否适应这种变化？
