◎简　　介

　　该剧以罗马帝国的背景展开，揭示了一支撼动罗马帝国统治的重要军事力量。公元400年，罗马帝国在世界上的统治虽日趋衰弱，但仍是最强盛的国家。这期间一支来自东方的匈奴族军队由阿提拉带领横扫欧亚大陆，开始挑战罗马帝国的霸主地位。

　　

　　匈奴族的首领阿提拉年轻时勇猛善战，但也生性残忍，匈奴人力量的决定性崛起是自阿提拉登基成为匈奴帝国的王之后。公元４３３年，２７岁的阿提拉与他的兄弟布来达一同从他们的叔父罗阿斯手中继承了帝国的王位。４３６年，阿提拉无情地谋杀了他的胞兄，独自君临帝国，并且很快统一了整个部落联盟。与他的前辈们相比，阿提拉更具有雄心壮志，更富于侵略性，而且才智极为超群。他使罗马人蒙羞，使日尔曼人丧胆，具有令西人沮丧而无奈的强大力量，以至于他和他的匈奴铁骑都被称为“上帝之鞭”。

　　

　　当时罗马开始尚未对匈奴人失去控制，尚能以他们为雇佣军去攻打其他蛮族，主要是一些日尔曼和高卢部落。但阿提拉在娶罗马皇帝的姐姐的要求被拒之后，便以此为理由，开始进攻西部帝国。罗马帝国年轻的皇帝沉迷酒色，根本不懂治国之道，皇太后不得不起用被关进死牢的原军队统帅埃迪厄斯，把拯救罗马的希望寄托在他的身上。

　　

　　这位狡猾的统帅一面同阿提拉联合兼并邻邦，一面勾结邻邦设法消灭阿提拉。最后，英武阿提拉在举行婚礼后被新婚妻子毒死。征服世界的壮志顷刻间化为泡影。罗马帝国的威胁消除，刚刚勉强保住了世界霸主的地位，作为军队统帅的埃迪厄斯失去了价值，已经成熟的皇帝便将目光转向了埃迪厄斯，将他杀掉。

　　

　　阿提拉虽然死了，但在历史上，他仍是一个极为突显的角色。阿提拉时期的匈奴帝国是匈奴史的最后一章，也是最辉煌的一章。
