◎简　　介　

　　在新奥尔良的一个夜晚，流氓布莱基因为打牌和非法移民科查卡发生矛盾，于是伙同朋友枪杀了科查卡。尸体被发现后,公共卫生局的克林特·里德医生确定死者患有肺部疫病。为了防止大规模疫病的爆发，同时又不引起市民的恐慌，必须在四十八小时内秘密查找出所有与死者有过接触的人，克林特医生以及警察局长沃伦上校共同进行了紧迫的调查。而与此同时，布莱基怀疑同伙背叛自己，匪徒内部也出现了纠葛……
