　　这是一部纪录片，讲1970年代美国两所宠物公墓的情形。一所经营不善，地主收回地盘作他用，于是倒闭，埋在地下的动物要被挖出来，迁墓。老板在镜头前叙述那段时光，愤然激动，怪罪于一种将动物尸体分解后再利用的工厂，动物的皮毛筋骨都能寻得用途。这工厂的老板也上镜头，铿锵说着自己的经营理念，说处理动物尸体的市场前景是多么广阔，以及这服务的绝对必要性——如果死的是羊、是马，是动物园的大象，宠物公墓只能干瞪眼。
　　片子后段是另一间运转良好的宠物公墓，导演采访了老板，老板的两个儿子，各色的顾客。镜头前的言谈中，我们晓得这公墓各种行之有效的方法为宠物提供体面的墓地，提供祷告，提供缅怀的好环境。死去的宠物们得到一种尊严，这尊严来自与主人的朝夕相处，来自人们对于动物的良好感情。当然，这种情感只是影片的底色，导演借此要说的，是当是社会涌动的暗潮，是美国梦的一种变迁。比如公墓老板的两个儿子，一个文化不高，曾做销售员，后来卖保险，总结出许多在尘世中打拼奋斗的经验，但他还是在宠物公墓中寻得新的勃勃生机；另一个有过典型的大学生活，研究过高级的学问，玩过乐队，爱摇滚，有不成功的恋爱，经历各种思潮，如今安分守在小镇，打理公墓事务，清闲时放摇滚碟片听；或是将一只先锋牌的大音响拉出屋外，对着埋葬宠物的墓地，拨起吉他的弦。
