本教材共有十六单元，每个单元有一篇课文，单数单元的八篇课文在塑造学生正确的世界观、人生观、价值观等方面有所启迪。双数单元八篇课文则注重中国优秀传统文化的体现，每篇课文后均配以与课文相应的练习以帮助学生巩固已学的内容，练习形式灵活多变，知识性和思想性较强，课文的注释注重文化现象，旨在提高学生的文化修养。
