本教材主要包括了绪论、森林植物形态基础、植物分类学基础、裸子植物各论和被子植物各论5部分内容。（1）绪论部分主要介绍了与森林植物相关的基础知识，同时包括了我国森林资源概况、植物多样性、植物学组成以及本课程学习的目的与方法。（2）森林植物形态基础以根、茎、叶、花、果各部为描述对象，介绍了常见的植物描述名词，同时加以中文注释。（3）植物分类学基础介绍了植物的命名、植物分类系统和植物检索表的内容。（4）裸子植物各论以郑万钧系统为排列，介绍常见8个科28种裸子植物。（5）被子植物各论以哈钦松系统为排列，介绍华东地区常见的57个科的植物，种类近200种。全书共计选入223种常见的森林树种，每个物种均配有精美的植物彩图。在介绍各物种的同时，对相似或近缘的物种进行相应的简要介绍，供学生比较学习。
