本书从英、美等国著名小说中精选12篇(包括短篇和中长篇节选)，按照小说的基本要素和重要问题把全书分为12章，包括开端、结尾、情节、视点、不可靠叙述者、人物、悬念、重复、闯入的作者、文本中的读者、伦理、主题、意识流、内心独白、元小说等方面。

张俊萍，1973年生，女，浙江诸暨人，上海师范大学比较文学和世界文学专业博士。现就职于江南大学外国语学院，任副教授、硕士生导师。主要从事比较文学与世界文学研究。发表过比较文学方面专著2部（其中1部获市级社科成果二等奖）、叙事学方面专著1部（获市级社科成果三等奖）；参与编著2部；发表论文70余篇；主持过国家社科一般项目l项、教育部人文社科青年项目1项、省级项目3项、校级项目3项；参与各级科研和教学项目多项。
