本书以《申命记》经文的页边与行间的不具名注释为核心研究对象，综合文献学、教会史、教育史和地方史的研究路径，探讨在加洛林第二代君主查理曼的统治时期里昂地区的教会改革、文化复兴、教士教育等议题。本书对至今鲜有学者关注的“里昂注释”的现有版本进行了勘订和修正；结合内部与外部证据，首次对“里昂注释”进行了精准的断代（公元810年前后）和文本成书的语境分析；首次梳理了《申命记》的早期注疏史；首次对公元800年前后的里昂教会改革进行了穷尽史料的研究，并论证了“里昂注释”为何应当被视为这次改革运动的产物，以及如何服务于改革。
