本书分析了15部中国现代文学作品所包含的不同层面的中国文化。物质文化层面的分析基于《生活秀》《茶馆》《游园惊梦》和《红高粱》四部作品分别所描绘的小吃文化、茶文化、旗袍文化和酒文化，从具体的物质形态入手展示不同地方的生活百态、历史变迁和文化特色。在行为文化层面，通过对《平凡的世界》《呼兰河传》《边城》《许三观卖血记》四部作品中的民风习俗、节日庆典、生活状况等方面的考察展示中国人的勤劳、质朴和自强不息的性格特征。制度文化的改变清晰地反映了在社会变革面前人们的态度、选择和应对，进而更清晰地体现他们的精神风貌。具体而言，《家》《人生》《蛙》三部作品展现了普通大众对制度变革的推动和适应。精神文化是文化最稳定的层面，影响着人们的思想和行为。《荷花淀》《京华烟云》《活着》《围城》四部作品中的典型人物形象刻画着中国儒家、道家和佛教等传统哲学思想的深远影响。

冯学芳，1990年毕业于华中理工大学（现华中科技大学），现任教于华中科技大学外国语学院，任外语教育研究中心主任，副教授，硕士生导师。先后主持和参加国家社科基金项目、湖北省教改基金项目、华中科技大学自主创新基金和教学改革项目等十多个项目，在外语类核心期刊和正式期刊发表论文30多篇，已出版包括《中国语言文化》《英美影视语言与文化》和《生活万花筒》等著作7部。
