本书分为8个单元，包含人物、动物、食物、穿着、爱好、故事、交通、城市、校园、季节等多种主题，这些单元主题与学生的实际生活十分贴近，让学生既可以轻松地理解文章的内容，又可以从中学到很多日常生活用语，更好地运用英语。
本书在选文的过程中，编者注重文章的质量，精选了质量上乘、语言地道的文章，并重点关注了文章的难易程度。每个单元中的文章也按照阶梯递进的难易程度排序，符合小学生的认知心理。
书中设置了多种题型，除了常规的选择题、判断正误题外，还有完形填空、根据短文内容填空、根据短文内容回答问题以及写出单词的相应形式、写出单词的中文意思、连词成句、改错等基础知识题型，丰富多样。设置题目时，编者也充分考虑到了学生的阅读能力，让题目的难易程度适中，符合学生阅读训练的需要。
单元主题阅读部分中的每篇文章均设置了一个讲解的栏目，这个栏目从文章中选取了一个句子，并针对句子中出现的单词、短语、句型等语法知识进行讲解，将复杂的语法知识分散融入一篇篇文章中，从而让学生在阅读的同时掌握语法要点。此外，每篇文章均有详细的翻译，学生在自行阅读文章之后，可以对照译文，检查自己的理解是否正确。
