谁是哈密尔顿·这恐怕是读者看到本书后提出的问题，哈密尔顿（William Rowan Hamilton，1805-1865）是一位有名的数学家，1805年8月生于爱尔兰的都柏林。他的父亲是一位律师，又是一位商人。哈密尔顿从小天资超人，惊人早熟。他的叔父是一位当地的副牧师，又是一位语言学家，懂得许多欧洲语言、方言及近东语言。哈密尔顿从3岁开始就受叔叔的教养。他3岁就学会写英文信；5岁就能读拉丁语、希腊语和希伯来语的书籍；8岁又学会意大利语和法语；10岁学会阿拉伯语和梵文；14岁还学会印度斯坦语、马来语、孟加拉语。1818年，13岁的哈密尔顿因同快速计算器的一次接触，激发了他钻研数学的巨大兴趣，在他叔父的指点下，他自学了克莱罗（Clairaut）、拉普拉斯（Laplace）、牛顿（Newton）等人的著作。1821年，年仅16岁的哈密尔顿不仅能读懂拉普拉斯的《天体力学》，还发现其中关于力的平行四边形法则的证明中的错误，初次显露了他的数学才华，从此他的兴趣转到数学方面了。1823年7月，哈密尔顿考入都柏林的三一学院。他是一位出色的大学生，囊括了各种奖，尤以数学和古典文学成绩出色。1827年，他将一篇题为《光学系统的理论》的论文呈送给爱尔兰皇家科学院，由于这篇论文中建立了几何光学的体系，使年仅22岁的哈密尔顿被破格聘为三一学院天文学教授，当时他大学尚未毕业。1853年，他发表《四元数讲义》，并在当年被封为爵士勋位。1865年9月，哈密尔顿因痛风病去世，终年60岁。
