本书是“当代外语研究论丛”之一，为英语小句中名词性谓语的合法性问题研究，目的是在很简方案框架下，解释小句中位于谓词位置的非论元名词项合法性的检验机制。本研究采用特征核查机制，充分描述并解释了处于非论元位置的小句谓语名词通过多重一致操作与主动词形成一致关系，通过参与抽象格核查获得合法身份的核查机制，证明了谓语名词在小句结构中抽象格地位。
