本书回顾了中外翻译史上对翻译核心问题及对等效论的争鸣,介绍了侯国金的语用标记等效翻译原则,引入功能学派的目的论并移植、整合至语用标记等效翻译原则,构建了一个基于目的论的语用标记等效翻译原则。该原则批判扬弃了等效(值)论和目的论的核心成分,尝试调和等效论和目的论的冲突,构建了一个整合的翻译理论框架,尝试以此描写、解释并指导翻译行为,探索翻译研究的新路向。在理论构建方面,本书把等效和目的置于跨文化交际的视野之下,厘清二者互相依存、辨证统一的关系,打通翻译的本体论和方法论;在理论应用方面,本书界定了翻译语境的概念,进而运用语文学、语言学及文化学等多维资源,考察几种语境参与程度不同的翻译类型。具体而言,本书以跨文化交际翻译行为的效果最优化为导向,以翻译过程中的语用标记值为译文构思、修改和评估的切入点,对比分析了语境参与程度不同的各种语类源文和(或)(平行)译文,从中寻求佳译在与其相应源语语用标记等效方面的量化表征,证明了基于目的论的语用标记等效翻译原则具有比其各个整合部分更强的解释力和指导意义,也验证了作者对涉及的三个理论模型进行修正的合理性、可行性及可操作性。书中实证章节部分不少篇幅关注该理论框架在普通语篇翻译、双语词典翻译、翻译教学(与教学翻译)、公示语翻译及新词新义翻译等领域的启示价值,有助于指导多种翻译类型译文的形成、评估及翻译教学。
