鲁思·盖尔恩斯、斯图尔特·雷德曼编著的这套《牛津英语词汇》系列丛书共三本，根据学习者水平的不同分为初阶、中阶和高阶，本书为初级修订版，旨在让学生学习、练习和复习新单词，可用于课堂教学，也适用于学生自学。本书分别选取2000多个单词或词组，包括80个单元和练习，每个单元均有一个主题，根据学习者的水平设置适量新词和练习。单元与单元之间根据主题的相关性再组合为一个大的主题单元，每个主题单元之后也设置练习供学习者复习及测试。书后设有单词表、练习题的答案以及所列单词的发音指南。
