Best friends Turtle and Snake check out books from the library on camping; pack their tent, sleeping bags, and backpacks; and set off-around trees, into the brook, across the pond to the campgrounds. Later, a spooky noise (an owl's hoot) startles them and they hurry back to their best camping spot-home-where they roast marshmallows in the fireplace. A truncated version of Michael Rosen's We're Going on a Bear Hunt (McElderry, 1989), the text has a succinct liveliness about it, and the childlike primary-colored cartoons are funny and add to the book's charm. Animals in many of the pictures are reading books-an unobtrusive message for beginning readers.
