The children's fashion market is primarily a market in which big fashion labels grant franchises, mainly for financial reasons. Words like Baby, Mini, Junior, Little, Bonsai or Pocket are attached to the front of the brand name, and the style and essence of the original collection is reduced to child-size. Because this has nothing to do with authentic kids' fashion design, we haven't included such collections in our book. We would much rather introduce you to independent children's fashion designers who have good taste and a great willingness to experiment with style, and who never lose sight of their target audience...

We would much rather introduce you to independent children's fashion designers who have good taste and a great willingness to experiment with style, and who never lose sight of their target audience.
Each designer is introduced through many different photographs from articles, catalogues and lookbooks, as well as various sketches and moods. These images are accompanied by a short blurb describing the designers' personal background and the philosophy behind their label.
The selection of designers is international, although most of the collections come from Belgium, Holland, France and Italy, countries where kids' fashion is especially valued. The more child- and family-friendly the country, the more diverse and rich it's kids' fashion tends to be. It's no coincidence that children's fashion is almost always a family affair, ranging from the traditional Italian family business to the fashion designer in Antwerp or New York who, after giving birth to her own children, simply shifted her target audience.
