学习诗歌能够体会诗人的诗心，让我们能够感悟人生，滋养情感，温阔心灵；能够培养我们高尚的情操和高雅的情趣。由胡选恩和胡哲共同编著的本研究《美国经典诗歌研究／中外语言与文化论丛》以美国著名诗人的代表性诗歌为研究对象，按照新批评所倡导的细读法，对每一首诗歌的形式、措辞、修辞、音韵特征和主题思想进行解读，全面而系统地展示美国经典诗歌思想性与艺术性的完美统一。

由胡选恩和胡哲共同编著的《美国经典诗歌研究／中外语言与文化论丛》一书对25位美国著名诗人的77首经典诗歌进行了解读。它首先表明了每一首诗歌的形式即格律和韵律；其次，对诗歌中的典故和诗性语言进行了注释并对每一行诗歌用简单明了的现代英语释义；再次，分析了诗歌中的音乐手法，如头韵、中间音省略、和音、谐音等；之后，探讨了诗歌中的修辞手法，如明喻、暗语、提喻、借喻、双关、拟人、直呼、跨行连读、首语重复、矛盾修饰、修饰转移等；最后，讨论了诗歌所表现的意境和诗意，旨在展示诗歌优美的韵律、巧妙的修辞手法、独到的意境和诗人的诗心。
