They are quite random, just like those wrapping paper designs you would see at bookshops.It also comes with a useful DVD that includes 243 (as stated) patterns available as Photoshop and Illustrator EPS files. The Illustrator files are of course the vector patterns. It actually includes more patterns than shown in the book as there are several variations to the same patterns.
