Franklin Gothic (designed by American Morris Fuller Benton, 1872-1948) is once again the main type family used throughout this year's edition. The headers and boxed features use Novarese - a serif font that hints at chiseled Greek lettering - by the Italian type designer Aldo Novarese (1920-95).
Novarese also designed the Microgramma typeface used in our text block (above). It is a solid, masculine typeface that was designed in the 1950s and is evocative of television screens, architecture and aircraft windows of that era. It captures the postwar enthusiasm for new technology and a brighter future - the optimistic ideal of the technological revolution of those times. This idea of looking to the future from the past also permeates the design of this year's pages. Our designers, Keren and Lisa at Itonic, took inspiration from the "steampunk" genre and created a lush, visually rich environment inspired by Victoriana and 1950s' fantasy and sci-fi. It's a bold look that synthesizes the old and new - perfect for visualizing the 2010 edition.
The prospect of a new decade also inspired us to look back over the past 10 years of record breaking - a period longer than many of our younger readers have been alive. Look out for special "decade" features such as video clips, interviews and free downloads scattered throughout the book.
