本书旨在让国际社会更为全面准确地了解中国西南民族的现状与理解中国的民族宗教政策，并促进中国学者与国际学者的交流和中国西南研究的深化。

本书的内容包括中国学者对西南民族的文化、社会、社会性别、社会文化变迁与发展以及民族学和人类学方法等方面的研究论文23篇。其中，大部分文章以田野调查所获取的第一手材料为基础撰写而成，展示了中国西南丰富的民族文化多样性和中国民族宗教政策在促进少数民族发展方面所取得的成就，也体现了中国学者对西南民族研究的学术视角和解释模式；也有论文从中国西南民族的实际出发，并站在当前国际学术界关于民族学人类学研究方法反思的平台上，进行了理论性的探讨，体现了中国学者与国际学者对话的勇气。本书从一个侧面体现了当前中国学者对于西南研究的进展和成就。
