Talent, inventiveness, imagination or genius at all were denied to women. The otherwise very open-minded Pierre Joseph Proudhon described woman as a kind of "artist" to whom the household and domestic work should be entrusted. Women were not considered capable of producing anything that was avant-garde. They were relegated instead to the realms of feeling and compassion.
