On my studio wall I have a quotation from Emily Dickinson: "My business is circumference." I walk past it, wondering just how she meant that. I know that if I put my arms up in a sort of circle I’m making something of a circumference. Is that what she meant? To surround? To surround what? The world? All the laundry and pencil-sharpening and drudgery and excitement, all the discoveries and war and peace, all the birth and death and laughter and tears?
