为了加快高校教材多样化、系列化、立体化建设的步伐，全面提高教材建设水平，以适应21世纪高等教育改革和发展的需要，我们努力编写理念新、体系新、内容新、方法新、手段新、有特色、水平高的创新教材。《实用综合英语》即是在这一思想指导下编写出的一部高职高专公共英语教材。本教材是依据教育部颁发的《高职高专教育英语课程教学基本要求》（以下简称《基本要求》）与《高等学校英语应用能力考试大纲和样题》（以下简称《考试大纲》）编写的。本教材以全面提高学生的综合素质为宗旨，在充分考虑和分析目前高职高专英语教与学新特点的基础上，满足学生学习和教师教学的基本需求，注重开发和培养学生的英语综合应用能力，为学生的终身学习和个人发展奠定良好的基础。全书共分十个单元，每个单元又由阅读教学、听与说、语法要点以及阅读与写作训练构成。
