本书保持原版的编写体例和风格，对素材进行了更新。 增加了化学专业类文章，删减了诺贝尔化学奖颁奖致辞及类似体裁的内容。部分章节的内容进行了修订。考虑到近年来学生英语水平的提高，也删除了一些难度较低的文章。课后练习中增加了英文原版教材中的练习题，旨在使学生尝试以英文思维方式解决化学问题，加强语感训练。

本教材供已通过大学英语四级的应用化学专业学生及相关专业学生、同等英语水平和相关专业的科技人员使用。
