这本研究论文集总结8年来中国家蚕基因组计划的主要研究结果，为已经启动并有着美好前景的家蚕功能基因组计划提供借鉴和参考。全书分为四个部分，收录了这个期间正式发表的论文共计68篇，分别反映中国家蚕基因组计划之背景、意义和策略(4篇)；测序、生物信息学和基因组分析(15篇)；关键平台技术(17篇)和功能基因组及其应用(31篇)等。

这本研究论文集第一部分的4篇，加上代序的1篇共计5篇文章，内容主要围绕家蚕基因组计划的科学、产业和文化价值，国际竞争与合作的背景和中方应采取的方针和策略，以及项目的组织和实施等诸多方面进行了论述。这些文献不但透彻阐述了家蚕基因组计划的意义，而且实际上也成为了组织和实施中国家蚕基因组计划的纲领。第二部分收集了关于家蚕EST测序结果，家蚕基因组测序、拼接、组装、注释，以及家蚕基因组构造特征、比较基因组和进化分析等方面的研究文章，反映了中国家蚕基因组计划的主体成果。第三部分以平台技术建立为主，收集了家蚕基因组信息与数据库、转基因技术、蛋白质组学、基因干涉(RNA interference，RNAi)、细胞生物学等重要平台技术建立方面的论文。这些平台技术，对于家蚕功能基因筛选和功能鉴定，乃至对整个家蚕功能基因组计划都至关重要，不可或缺。第四部分主要反映了家蚕重要生物学性状相关功能基因的研究成果，其中以分子免疫、性别决定、发育变态和丝蛋白的合成这四大性状最为重要，成为整个家蚕功能基因组研究的核心科学问题。家蚕基因组研究，一方面具有科学方面的重大价值，另一方面对于蚕丝产业技术的推动作用也是人们极其关注和期待的。因此，第四部分还收集了与素材创新和经济性状改良等相关的论文。
