The Beijing Olympic games were televised all over the world. At the same time, sports facilities were also broadly introduced.Architects from ill over the world competed to design these facilities. They gave an impression of being temporary and experimental exhibition structures in a large pavilion called Beijing.A problem is that some of these facilities were built in the historic districts after destroying historical architectural pieces. As the relation between the old and the new was cut, it is feared that the innovativeness of the new buildings will not become recognizable in years to come. In contrast, the lighting design of the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris is superb. If that modern chandelier were hung in a modern building, it would be just a mediocre design. By destroying classic buildings, Beijing might have lost its toehold for creatinga new architectural style in the future. This is similar to what happened in Tokyo in the past.
