This is a book about architecture, which is to say, a book about buildings: in particular, buildings conceived and constructed from a perspective that I call "the modern impulse." By the modern impulse, I mean a set of principles that has animated the long history of architectural modernism and continues to inform the best buildings of our time. Although we may fail to realize them in practice, these principles represent the design imperatives appropriate to the age we live in and are therefore worth striving to fulfill.
