故事的起因是1866年在海上出现了一头大“海怪”，并有船只遇袭。博物学家阿龙纳斯教授应邀参加了追捕“海怪”的行动。但是他们的战舰遭精通了“海怪”的凶猛反击，教授和两位同伴落水，反被“海怪”所救。此后三人便跟随“海怪”周游四海，一同领略海底世界的神奇和美丽；而他们所经历的同鲨鱼博斗、冰山封路、章鱼袭击等众多险情更是悬念迭生、惊心动魄。
