This exhibition was initiated not so much to champion a particular place for Julio Gonzaez in the history of twentieth century sculpture, but to offer a concentration of his remarkable work to new audiences. Inevitably in the period since the Tate Gallery exhibition in 1970, his links to the metalsmith traditions of his native Catalonia have been favourably reassessed, along with the importance of his work in stone. The show has been jointly organised by the South Bank Centre and the Whitechapel Art Gallery and in making the selection we have looked for sculpture in all media, concentrating on the years 1928-42, and stressing the human theme which runs throughout....
