"Hedoes not love you as much as I do. You should love me insteadof him. We can be very happy together." This made her angry at him, and she went out to look forLysander. Demetrius was tired and fell asleep. The fairy King realized that Puck had put the magic floweron the wrong man. The result was that Lysander loved Helena,Helena loved Demetrius, Demetrius loved Hermia, and Hermialoved Lysander. The King wanted to help Helena. "Go and find Helena," he told Puck, "Demetrius is sleepinghere. Bring Helena to him. I will put some magic flower on hiseyes so that when he wakes up, he will see her and love her." He put the magic flower on Demetrius' eyes, and Puck went tofind Helena. When he found her, he brought her to Demetrius, butLysander came with her. He was still asking her to love him.him. She was angrier than ever. "Don't play these silly jokes on me!" she shouted. "You areiust having fun at my expense!" "You love Hermia," Lysander reminded Demetrius. "Youdon't love Helena. Tell her that you don't love her, and perhapsshe will love me!" "You can keep your Hermia," said Demetrius. "I don't loveher now. I love Helena, and I always will." Hermia found them arguing and asked Lysander why he lefther sleeping in the forest. "Love told me to go," he replied. "I had to follow Helena.She is beautiful, and I love her!" Hermia could not understand this. Only a short time ago,Lysander loved her and risked death to marry her. How could hesuddenly change and love Helena instead of her? Helena thought that Hermia was part of the joke and toldher that she was being cruel to her friend. Helena was becomingangrier and angrier, and Hermia was becoming more and moreconfused. Both men said they loved Helena, but Helena did notbelieve either of them. Nobody loved Hermia. The two men began to fight. Then Hermia accused Helena oftaking her lover from her, and the two women began to fight.Helena begged the two men to stop Hermia from hurting her. "I will suffer because you are enjoying a joke," she said. Thenshe begged Hermia to stop the joke and leave her alone. Sherepeated that she loved Demetrius. The fairy King and Puck were watching as the four youngpeople began to fight. The fairy King blamed Puck for makinga mistake, but Puck was happy. He thought it was fun to watchthem fight. The King did not agree. He told Puck to make thenight very dark so that the two men could not see each othe~ Thenthey would become tired and fall asleep. When they were asleep,Puck had to put some magic water in Lysander's eyes, and thiswould take away the magic that made him love Helena. Theneveryone would be happy. Lysander would love Hermia insteadof Helena, and Demetrius would love Helena instead of Hermia.Meanwhile, the King would find the Queen and ask her for theservant he wanted and take the magic away from her eyes, too. Puck tricked the two men so that they could not fight. He madethe night very dark. They could not find each other. He pretendedto be Demetrius and called Lysander, and then he pretendedto be Lysander and called Demetrius. Then he pretended to heDemetrius again, and so on, so that the two men ran all over theforest and became tired searching for each other. Lysander became tired first and lay down to rest. He decided tocatch Demetrius in the morning and fight him then. He soon fellasleep. Puck continued to call out to Demetrius and hide fromhim until Demetrius became tired, too, and lay down to rest.
