本书是一本供高职高专非英语专业学生使用的教材。该教材是“新高职综合英语教程”丛书第一册，该书共10单元，每单元均安排了“听说训练”“阅读活动”“综合技能训练”三部分内容，“听说训练”包括听力哲学、听力练习和听口语训练三单元，旨在激发学生的学习兴趣，培养学生的口语对话和语篇理解能力；“阅读活动”主要是为了提高学生的阅读技能；“综合技能训练”分翻译技能训练和实用英语技能训练两部分，它旨在培养学生的实际的翻译能力以及掌握书中《交际技能表》中所涉及的实用英语语言技能。另外，该书也可供社会上英语自学者学习使用。

《新高职综合英语教程》系列教材是由全国各地有丰富教学经验的教师根据教育部高教司颁发的《高职高专教育英语课程教学基本要求》组织编写的。本套教材倡导现代外语教学理念，贯彻“听、说、读、写、译协调发展”和“实用性、实践性”的原则，在融合“主题教学”和“任务型教学”的基础上，注重培养语言技能和实际涉外交际能力。
