The origins of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the oldest art museum in Texas, can be traced to the educational reform movements that flourished in the United States in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Since the 1840s education reformers like Horace Mann in Massachusetts and Henry Barnard in Washington, D.C., had promoted the fine arts as an essential element in the basic curricula of elementary-school education.
