The Menil Collection is proud to present the first exhibition to focus on the Surrealist dimension of one of the most innovative American sculptors of the twentieth century: Alexander Calder. When Calder became "Calder," well known for his signature mobiles and stabiles, it was due to a unique conjunction of presiding influences in Paris in the 1920s and i93os--among them Jean Arp, Marcel Duchamp, Joan Miro, and Piet Mondrian. Expertly curated by Adjunct Curator of Twentieth-Century Art Mark Rosenthal, "The Surreal Calder" is a historic event that returns the artist to the midst of Surrealism so that his achievement can be more profoundly understood.
