The idea for a complete catalogue of the paintings of Stanley Spencer was first suggested to me by Norman Rosenthal while I was working on the 1980 Royal Academy Stanley Spencer RA exhibition, for which I chose the paintings and wrote the section introductions and entries for the catalogue.
