It was no very unusual thing for Mr. Lestrade, of ScotlandYard, to look in upon Sherlock Holmes and myself of an eveningand share details of a case upon which the detective was engaged.Occasionally, Mr. Holmes was able to give rather helpful sugges-tions, due to his vast knowledge and experience.

On this particular evening, however, Lestrade was rather quiet.Holmes looked keenly at him and asked: "Anything remarkable onhand?"

"Well, Mr. Holmes, there is something on my mind, but it is suchan absurd business, that I hesitated to bother you about it. It has abit to do with madness, and a strange madness, too. You wouldn'tthink there was anyone living at this time of day who had such a ha-tred of Napoleon the First that he would commit burglary in order tobreak images of the emperor."

Holmes sat up.  "Burglary? Let me hear the details."

Lestrade took out his official notebook and refreshed his memoryfrom its pages.

"The first case reported was four days ago," said he. "It was atthe shop of Morse Hudson, who has a place for the sale of pictures andstatues in the Kennington Road. The assistant had left the front shopfor an instant, when he heard a crash, and hurrying in he found aplaster bust of Napoleon lying shattered into fragments. It seemed justto be one of those senseless crimes which occur from time to time."The second case, however, was more serious, and also moresingular. It occurred only last night. Not far from Morse Hudson'sshop there lives a well-known medical practitioner, named Dr. Bar-nicot. Being an enthusiastic admirer of Napoleon, he recently pur-chased from Morse Hudson two duplicate plaster casts of the fa-mous head of Napoleon by the French artist, Devine. One of thesehe placed in his home at Kennington Road, and the other in his of-rice at Lower Brixton. The doctor, this morning, found the cast miss-ing from his home. It was discovered dashed into pieces in his gar-den."

Holmes rubbed his hands.

"This is certainly very novel," said he.

"Indeed, it is. And you can imagine the doctor's amazementwhen, on arriving at his office, he found his second bust had alsobeen smashed. In neither case were there any signs which couldgive us a clue as to who had done the mischief. Now, Mr. Holmes, you have got the facts."

"May I ask whether the two busts were exact duplicates of theone which was destroyed in Morse Hudson's shop?" asked Mr.Holmes.

"They were taken from the same mould."

"Then, considering how many hundreds of statues of the greatEmperor must exist in London, I doubt that this is a matter of ha-tred toward Napoleon."  P6-9
