The title "I Like America: Fictions of the WildWest" references an enthusiasm in German-speaking Europe for the American Wild West that dates back to the early nineteenth century. It was then that increasing numbers of Germans began to emigrate to the United States, hopeful that there they might find a place within the untouched countryside, whose resplendent forests and lakes still sheltered the noble Indian. One of the earliest descriptions we have of German-speaking migrants crossing the plains was noted by Fritz Hugh Ludlow in 1863 during a trip he and Albert Bierstadt took to California.
