Carlos Raul Villanueva (1900-1975), born in London, grew up and was educated in Paris, and was acquainted with the contemporary artists of the avant-garde. In 1929 he founded his own architectural office in Caracas, where he designed and realized many large buildings, including the University Campus of Caracas, which consists of approximately 40 buildings; the Aula Magna Hall with its curved white ceiling from which large colored tiles by Alexander Calder are suspended is particularly remarkable. Villanueva’s architecture combines the radical style of Modernism with a dynamic and personal use of color and form. This book is the only monograph on the oeuvre of Venezuela’s most important architect.
